Course Summary

The objective of this course is to fully understand the various drilling programs associated with drilling or planning a well. Safety of the personnel is very important in well planning and the well must be designed to minimize risks of blowouts and other problems associated with drilling well. Full understanding of the different survey methods, BHA criteria selection, Bit and casing size selection. Demonstrate knowledge using the well plan software to design a well from start to finish taking into consideration all the factors that need to be considered during well design and Well cost analysis.

  • Well type and Design selection
  • Drilling Rig and tools
  • HSE
  • Hole geometry selection: (casing and bit size selection procedures and possible challenges)
  • Offset well selection
  • Data sources: (bit records, mud records, IADC reports, Mud logging records, Seismic records)
  • Casing setting depth selection and design procedures
  • Cementing
  • Torque and drag analysis
  • BHA selection
  • Pore pressure consideration
  • Structural Geology (faults, folds, salt dome detection)
  • Anti-collision policies
  • 6 sigma analysis for Target tolerance
  • Survey method
  • Survey equipment types and accuracies
  • Well plan monitoring and error detection and correction
  • Well planning software
  • Projection to Bit calculation exercises
  • BHA Analysis
  • Planning costs, time consideration, location preparation, support and backup services and equipment.
